FAQ
Andrea Tosi is an Italian composer, orchestrator and music director. He writes music for film, television, musical theatre and records. In 2025 he reached the Oscars top 15 (shortlist) with the film Imprinting.
Films include Imprinting (directed by Andrea Ciavatta, Oscars 2025 shortlist), Frammenti (directed by Raffaello Sasson), A Dark Rome and El Barrilete (RaiCinema). In theatre: The Christ – When Time Began Again, Chiara di Dio, Patto di Luce and Evolushow with Enrico Brignano. The full list is in the portfolio.
Collaborations include Enrico Brignano, Armando Trovajoli, Iva Zanicchi, Marisa Laurito and Garinei e Giovannini. In 1999 he was music consultant for Francis Ford Coppola (Illy Caffè), and in 2001 he gave technical and musical support to Sting for a livestreamed concert at his Tuscan estate.
He started at five, when his grandmother bought him a piano. He played by ear for years, then studied composition and orchestration to be able to read the scores of the masters, John Williams above all. The hardest exams were behind closed doors: orchestrating a piano score by hand for a 52-piece concert band, every instrument in its own key and transposition, with nothing to check the work against. He sat the orchestration exam twice and the composition exam twice, for 48 and 36 hours.
He starts by listening. For Imprinting the director handed him twenty musical references from the 1970s, each with a marked passage: a texture, a rhythm, a tone. The job was not to imitate them but to understand what each was saying and compose something new with the same emotional DNA, across forty minutes of music that had to sound like a single voice. When live players stepped in, the arrangements came alive.
He looks for a technical solution before giving up. The first presentation of The Christ, with ten singers and actors, had been filmed, but the voices ended up blended with the music in a single mono file, with poor sound. Andrea separated voice and music with an AI tool and rebuilt everything in Cubase, keeping the original track underneath as an anchor so the lip sync would not be lost.
Urgent deadlines are a constant in this work, because the request often arrives late. For his first national musical, a week before the theatre opened, songs and mixes were unfinished: he worked day and night in Stefano Melone's studio in Pesaro until delivery.
He uses the tools that are useful, knowing what they can and cannot do. For the The Christ teaser he generated about 45 narration takes, choosing the best of each line and editing them in Cubase, and 174 clips for one minute and forty seconds of video. The music remains composed and orchestrated by him. For Andrea, AI can generate but it does not decide: music is the chain of human choices behind every note, every silence, every instrument.
It is a new original musical with music by Andrea Tosi, currently in development. The project has received the Apostolic Blessing of Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV. More at thechristmusical.com and on the The Christ page.
Two albums came out in July 2026: The Inner Journey (1 July), an instrumental album of seven pieces between cinematic and meditative atmospheres, and L'arte è una fata (24 July), a children's musical in 6 scenes and 6 songs with lyrics by Silvia Davy and vocals by Sophy.
